Hello Kidz Klub!

The month of May will take us all over the world on Where in The World !! We will journey to countries near and far, learning about their history, culture & language, cuisine, and other fun facts.  We will be introduced to important citizens, visit famous landmarks, and learn regional recipes.

This week, we’re flying over the Atlantic Ocean to the United Kingdom: England, Scotland, Whales, and Northern Ireland to continue our exploration.  On our way back home at the end of the week, we will make a pit stop to Iceland.

Are you ready? This is going to be another exciting week! Let’s board our virtual airplane and fly to England!

  Be Safe. Be healthy. Enjoy!

Take good care.

Let's Learn About England!

History:

Did you know …  The first Britons (people who live in the United Kingdom) were the Picts, who arrived about 10,000 years ago. In the eighth century B.C., the Celts arrived from Europe and pushed the Picts north into Scotland. In A.D. 43, the Romans invaded and ruled for nearly 400 years. By the sixth century A.D., German peoples known as Angles, Jutes, and Saxons were moving into Britain. The Angles gave their name to England, and English people became known as Anglo-Saxons. In 1485 the Welsh noble Henry Tudor claimed the English crown and became Henry VII, the first of five Tudor monarchs.

Culture & Language:

Did you know …  England is part of the United Kingdom (UK). Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are the other countries that make up the UK. Most people in England are British. However, the country also has many immigrants. These people come from many different countries. They speak many different languages and have different religions and cultures. The official language of England is English, but you probably guessed that on your own! What you might not know is that Cornish, a language from the olden days of England, is still one of the official minor languages!  England uses the pound sterling for their money.

A: Because the queen has reigned there for years!

Q: Who made King Arthur’s round table?

A: Sir-Cumference

Q: When is a piece of wood like a king?

A: When it’s the ruler!

Q: Which king felt a fraction of his former self?

A: Henry the 1/8th!

Knock! Knock!

Who’s there?

Queen who?

Queen your room. It’s messy!

The traditional food of England has long been recognized for its simplicity of ingredients and flavor. However, because of England’s complex history of people from all over the world having settled in the country, many flavors and techniques are used to make their simple, but flavorful dishes.  The Sunday Roast is a traditional British main meal that is typically served on Sunday (hence the name), consisting of roasted meat, roast potatoes, or mashed potatoes, and accompaniments such as Yorkshire Pudding, stuffing, gravy and mint sauce. Vegetables such as cauliflower, roast parsnips, brussel sprouts, peas, carrots, runner beans, and broccoli, can be part of the dish.  But, it’s the classic Fish and Chips that is the British national dish that everyone can't help but love.

Here’s a video of how to make a Proper British Fish and Chips… Yum!
