Kidz Klub Connection 20

Charisse, Licensed Childcare Director • Apr 17, 2020

Hello Kidz Klub!

Happy Friday!  You made it through another virtual learning week!  I hope you are all engaging in the schoolwork your teachers have put together, as well as enjoying all the fun activities your Club staff are posting daily.

For this week’s theme, I’ve brought back a Kidz Klub favorite activity … Which Way U.S.A. !! You will get to discover a new state each day, learning about things such as: state bird, state flower, nickname, agriculture and industry, and other interesting facts.

How did I choose the states that you will be discovering?  I wrote the ones I put on my bucket list to visit with Mr. Gregg on individual pieces of paper, put them all in a bowl, and then randomly picked 5 pieces of paper.  The winners are … drum roll please … Louisiana, Texas, Oregon, Arizona, and Hawaii.

I hope you enjoyed your journey to Arizona yesterday.  Today we’re headed to Hawaii.  So, let’s go on another adventure to the beautiful state of Hawaii!

Be Safe. Be healthy. Enjoy!

Take good care.

     Miss  Charisse

Let's Learn About Hawaii (HI)

History:

Did you know …In 1898 Hawaii became a U.S. territory. It was named the 50th state in 1959. The first people to arrive at the Hawaiian Islands were the Polynesians. They travelled to Hawaii by canoe around 500 AD. These original peoples farmed the land and fished for food. Each settlement was ruled by a chief called the ali'i. There were many strict rules called "kapu" that the people lived by and the chief's word was law. LEARN MORE: HERE, HERE, & HERE.

Agriculture and Industry:

Did you know …In the mid-1800s, the main industry in Hawaii was farming sugarcane. Many people moved to Hawaii from places like China and Japan to work the sugarcane fields. Many businesses from the United States became involved in the sugarcane industry and soon the Kingdom of Hawaii and the United States had established close ties and trade treaties. Today, Hawaii’s Key Industries are: pineapples, macadamia nuts, bananas, and coffee. LEARN MORE: HERE, HERE, & HERE.

Spam Musubi

Hawaii has no official state foods, but it does have an edible state plant: the Kalo plant, also known as taro, which was important to the people of Hawaii. If Hawaii were to name an official food, the obvious choice would be Spam, which is so beloved there that it’s known as “Hawaiian steak.” One of Hawaii’s iconic foods made with the “Hawaiian Steak” is Spam Musabi.  Here is a recipe, as well as a video on making this popular Hawaiian dish.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups uncooked short-grain white rice
  • 2 cups water
  • 6 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • ¼ cup soy sauce
  • 1.4 cup oyster sauce
  • ½ cup white sugar
  • 1 (12 ounce) container fully cooked Spam
  • 5 sheets sushi nori (dry seaweed)
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil

Directions

  1. Soak uncooked rice for 4 hours; drain and rinse.
  2.  In a saucepan bring 2 cups water to a boil. Add rice and stir. Reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 20 minutes. Stir in rice vinegar, and set aside to cool.
  3. In a separate bowl, stir together soy sauce, oyster sauce, and sugar until sugar is completely dissolved. Slice luncheon meat lengthwise into 10 slices, or to desired thickness, and marinate in sauce for 5 minutes.
  4. In a large skillet, heat oil over medium high heat. Cook slices for 2 minutes per side, or until lightly browned. Cut nori sheets in half and lay on a flat work surface. Place a rice press in the center of the sheet, and press rice tightly inside. Top with a slice of luncheon meat, and remove press. Wrap nori around rice mold, sealing edges with a small amount of water. (Rice may also be formed by hand in the shape of the meat slices, 1 inch thick.) Musubi may be served warm or chilled.
