A Message from our Education Director, Hannah...

Hi all!

You are so very much missed at the club. While we may have seen some snow flurries this past weekend, this week’s activities will take us to warmer places to hear about sea turtles! You can also create your own marble races and paper roller coasters, make your own personal poems, and more!

Wishing you all well!

Sea Turtles!

If any of you were members in Club H2 – Oh! I am missing all our fun marine themed games! If you want to explore more online, this week’s topic is Sea Turtles!

You can check out Mystic Aquarium’s very own Green Sea Turtle, Charlotte in their rehab program. You can check out updates on her here!

Did you know that sea turtles use the moon and stars to guide them back to sea? What happens when hotels and homes add so many more lights? Check out what this citizen science group at Gulf Island National Seashore in Pensacola, Florida has to say!

If you are REALLY excited about Sea Turtles, Reef Relief releases videos throughout the week, and you can checkout their lesson on Sea Turtles while following along with fun worksheets!

Personal Poems

Try your hand at poetry with this template of your very own personal poem! Before you start, you can try to journal while reflecting. Skim through the following questions to start brainstorming:

  1. What is your full name? Is there a story to how you were named?
  2. What is your favorite color? What does it make you think of?
  3. Who are your closest friends? Do you remember when you met them for the first time?
  4. If you could have a superpower, what would it be? What would you do with it?
  5. You are a winner of a free vacation anywhere in the world! Where would you go? Who would you bring? What will you do there?
  6. If you could be a MASTER of any subject in school, which topic would you pick?

Explore & Create With Food!

Join Plato in travelling around the world while making your own yummy online breakfast, lunch, and dinners! Explore options from avocado toast in Australia, sautéed reindeer in Finland, baobab fruit in Benin, and more! Good luck!

After, grab an adult, and try your hand at creating your own yummy side dishes with these fun 4 ingredients or less recipes!

Check out this article in Time for Kids “A Promising Start”.  Lebron James’s success came from years of hard work and dedication. Reflect and journal what your goals are as a family member, student, athlete, leader, artist, musician, dancer, community member or more. What are some short-term goals? How can you work to make sure that you are continuing to live with intention towards those goals? Change does not happen overnight, and you might not know what your goals are, or them might change week to week, and that is okay! Just take time to reflect when you can. When you want to start making change, remember our outline of SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-Bound). I then ask you to reflect, as Torch Club members, how would you want to include the community and club in these goals?

Take it easy, relax, and check out these inspiring coloring sheets if you want to take a rest from journaling.

Join a virtual field trip to the Alaska Sea Life Center to explore walruses, “the blob” mystery, Eiders (arctic sea ducks), and more!
